England and Wales Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
