The Reason the DNC Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

This move from the Democratic National Committee to block the publication of its internal autopsy report concerning the 2024 election appears stunning but entirely predictable. Resistant to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus often functions more like a PR firm than a political organization devoted to building local power capable of prevailing at the polls.

An Environment of Conformity

Reluctant to depart from the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has remained under that legacy throughout this past year. Making public such a report would have indicated whether the leadership actually want to promote honest conversation regarding the errors that enabled the former president to become president again. Instead, the leadership is moving forward as if there are no lessons to understand following the electoral catastrophe of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from our fundamental goal," a justification that has been offered to justify concealing the analysis.

Major Failures an Autopsy Would Have Explored

An autopsy report of substance would tackle head-on certain uncomfortable matters. These include:

  • Voter Disengagement: Losing among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the Democratic ticket during the previous election became a critical factor in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
  • The Decision to Seek Re-election: The determined insistence by a party leader to stay in the race, and a very late step-aside, is seen by some as denying Democratic voters the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Abandoning Core Democratic Voters: During a time of economic anxiety, the campaign reportedly bowing to powerful financial backers and not managing to address the effects of big business.
  • The Foreign Policy Impact: The refusal to reconsider a policy position on a major international conflict allegedly caused alienating significant blocs, especially among youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Youth Backing: Extensive evidence indicates a significant decrease in votes for the candidate among young voters.

A Record Shunning Scrutiny

This refusal is consistent with a recurring tendency of evading difficult realities. It recalls a dynamic where nearly all Democratic officeholder in Washington went along with a sitting president's insistence on running for re-election until a disastrous public debate performance forced a change.

At the same time, large majorities of the electorate had been consistently telling researchers that they opposed that candidate to seek re-election.

Campaign Spending Issues

An honest report might also investigate matters about financial allocations, such as the amounts flowed to party strategists and ad buyers over the course of an electoral effort that burned through a colossal amount during the general election.

The Underlying Problem

Ultimately, the secrecy of the official autopsy is symptomatic of a deference toward the existing power structure responsible for a losing national race. The message for rank-and-file members – including countless small donors – appears to be that they cannot be trusted to understand the lessons party chiefs claim to have learned from an analysis drawing from feedback from all states.

A party unable to critically review where it went wrong finds it difficult to climb out of the pattern that proved so helpful to the rival party.
